Situation
Commercial cold storage faces the challenge of maximising capacity while keeping energy consumption and associated costs down. Hydronic floor cooling is an ideal solution. Radiant cooling operates without the need for noisy, inefficient airflow. Installed during the slab pouring stage, hydronic cooling enables warehouse operators clearspan access for more effective storage and stock movement.

Melbournes Pixel building is a stunning example of cutting-edge architecture and forward thinking design. The Pixel building breaks ground as the first carbon neutral building of its kind in Australia and possibly the world.
Key Players
Architect: Studio 505
Developer: Grocon Constructions
Engineer: Umow Lai
Floor cooling: Inner City Hydronics/Hydrofloor
Approach
A four story building requiring 6000 linear meters of 20mm RAUH PINK.
The hydronic cooling system took was installed over 3 days per level by 5 trained hydronic system specialists.
All pipework is connected to a co-generation unit that services the building cooling requirements.
Additional Detail
Pixel is being assessed under the USA LEED and UK BREEAM rating systems, aiming to exceed the highest level score yet.

Environmentally Friendly Craigieburn Health Service |
Situation
Melbournes Northern Health opted for environmentally sustainiable design in the redevelopment of the Craigieburn Health Service facility. Aside from innovative water saving measures, Northern Health selected hydronic floor heating for installation across the site.
Key Players
State Government of Victoria
Northern Health
Floor heating: Inner City Hydronics/Hydrofloor
Approach
A single level building requiring installation of 20mm RAUH PINK across the site, including a series of programmable zones and distribution points.
The hydronic cooling system took was installed during the slab pour and later at service connection trained hydronic system specialists.
Additional Detail
The United Nations Association has now recognised Northern Health for water saving efforts on two occasions. As part of World Environment Day in June 2006 Northern Health received an Excellence in Water Management award.

Casey Aged Care, Melbourne |
 |
 |
Heating project location: |
Purpose built aged care facility,
City of Casey, Melbourne, Australia
|
Hydronic system type: |
Gas driven in floor commercial hydronic heating system, featuring multiple zones and timers to maximise resident comfort and optimise ongoing running cost
|
Floor heating requirement: |
Design, supply and install hydronic in floor heating system during construction of the purpose built aged care facility.
Constant ambient temperature required in all resident units and throughout common areas.
|
Special heating needs: |
Installation of a large scale hydronic underfloor heating system was undertaken prior to pouring the concrete slab and beneath resident units, bathrooms and common areas.
Prior to the project completion further infloor heating zones were successfully incorporated into the partly commissioned system.
The success of this hydronic floor heating project rests with its ability to achieve constant air temperature across a variety of environments with different levels of activity taking place. Radiant heat transfer is ideal in these situations.
The duct and appliance-free areas allow residents better use of available space. Impact injury risks are reduced and dust, pollen and other airborne respiratory irritants minimised.
